Pitchfork, Take Two

This was my second year at Pitchfork Festival, which takes place at Union Park. It’s one of my favorite festivals because it’s never too crowded, the bathrooms are always clean, there’s good food and of course an excellent lineup. Some highlights from this year: The best Animal Collective performance I’ve seen (and I’ve seen quite a few), discovering Sun Airway, Twin Sister (twice), the amount of weed smoked at Curren$y, Guided By Voices, and the entire Deerhunter set.

I had fun documenting the my little pony hair trend- it HAS reached the Midwest and I do believe it’s here to stay. Flip through the slideshow for some examples (#1 of course exemplified by Andrea of Twin Sister, who busted out a knee length turquoise wig on Day 3).

On Sunday I decided to ignore my wretched spring allergies and go to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for the last day of the Cherry Blossom Festival. It was packed, and lots of people dressed up for the occassion. It was like being in Japan for the day…

The Shows

SXSW is a veritable smorgasbord of music- there are shows at auditoriums, in bars, back yards, street corners, churches, alley ways, hotel rooms…pretty much anywhere you can think of at every second of the day. I landed on Wednesday evening and headed straight out to Duran Duran (girls on film! the chauffeur! hungry like a wolf!), but the surprise highlight of the week may have been Austra who opened for the Kills at the Domino Records showcase. These girls have moves, and I’m quite sure everyone (and I do mean everyone) fell in love that night. Definitely keep an eye our for these Toronto up and comers and take a listen to their album.

CHRISTEENE (NSFW)

At Siege’s Mardi Gras birthday party a couple weekends ago I met a sweet lovely boy named Paul from Austin, Texas. Paul was in town for a bunch of Christeene shows, his performance moniker. I heard Christeene was a crazy ass bitch, but after meeting him out of character I was convinced it couldn’t be too raunchy.

I was wrong.

Both shows were with Big Freedia, who I think actually showed less ass than Christeene (no easy feat). As she would say; WURK DAT STANKHOLE GIRRRLLL. You killed it! Make sure to come back to see us in NYC real soon.

Came across an amazing flickr stream featuring scans from someone’s personal collection of antique Japanese photos. Included are some of my favorites geishas, all hand painted photos from the early 1900′s.

Truly amazing.

Many of these he found while working in Japan during WWII, and it’s clear the guy knows his stuff (and probably hasn’t been the same since the war). In case you aren’t convinced to check out his bio, read this excerpt ( in reference to his captions) and then see how you feel.

Went down to Athens Friday night for a show organized by Henry of Chunklet Magazine featuring Man…or Astro-Man? at the 40 Watt club. Soundscreen Design did a limited edition 7″ record for the event to celebrate Touchable Sound, our new book on rare, DIY and underground 7″ design.
